During his lifetime, Valentin Ruth was a well-known and successful painter. He was a member of various academies and art associations, including Munich, Berlin and – of course – Düsseldorf, where he learnt to paint landscapes under Schirmer.

Due to his memberships in many associations, his atmospheric landscapes were shown at numerous group exhibitions from Antwerp to Gdansk, the Munich Glass Palace to the Berlin Royal Academy. In 1896, his home town of Hamburg organised a solo-exhibition for the artist in which around 200 of his works were shown.
