Not much is known about the painter Alexander Scherzer from Hamburg. In his book “Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts”, Friedrich von Boetticher lists only seven works by the artist. These mainly included seascapes and depictions of ships, Prussian frigates and coastal landscapes around Hamburg or the Channel Island of Guernsey. No information is recorded about this atmospheric depiction of the old city of Nuremburg.
