Modern art fresh out of the museum, contemporary artist achieves an auction record
Post-auction report - 1247 Evening Sale. Cologne, June 4
The large ‘Liegender Akt’ by Heinrich Campendonk achieved one million euro on its market debut, whilst contemporary art broke the auction record for works by Cosima von Bonin.
The large ‘Liegender Akt’by Heinrich Campendonk had been in various museums over the past few decades, but until now, not on the art market. Most recently it was on long-term loan to Museum Penzberg in the Campendonk Collection, but it still belonged to the Campendonk family, who then entered it into the Evening Sale. The canvas achieved a result of one million euro on its market debut.

There was also great interest in the bronze ‘Die Schwimmerin II’by the Bauhaus artist Gerhard Marcks. Acquired directly from the artist by the vendor, it had been in the same collection ever since. Numerous bidders on the telephone, online and in the room pushed this important sculpture up to a result of 300,000 euro. A further work by a Bauhaus artist,‘Drei Frauen von rückwärts’by Oskar Schlemmer was equally in demand. The 1932 watercolour is a study from the large painting ‘Bauhaustreppe’ from the same year which can be found today in MOMA in New York. It eventually sold to the successful bidder for 189,000 euro and remains in Germany.
With a sale of 378,000 euro, ‘Mobile Herbarium’by Max Ernst achieved the highest price amongst the works from the important Schneppenheim Collection, whilst the bronze ‘Janus’ rose under an extended bidding battle from 50,000 euro to sell for 115,000 euro.
The vibrantly coloured oil painting ‘Dahlien’ by Emil Nolde, was most recently on loan to the Brücke Museum in Berlin. It has now changed hands in the auction for 816,000 euro.
