A large ivory netsuke of a laughing Hotei with a karako. Early 19th century

Standing, his robe slipped off his left shoulder and supporting his pot-belly with his left hand, while a karako climbs over his shoulder and holds on to Hotei’s head and ear. The hair tufts of black horn, the ivory with a very shiny patina.
