A large boxwood netsuke of an oni with a mokugyo. Mid-19th century

Kneeling and beating a Buddhist gong placed between his feet, and wearing a scarf which hides his horns. The eyes of light and dark horn.
Height 4.3 cm

The representation either illustrates a repentant oni or a hypocritical demon mimicking a priest.
