Gustav Heinrich Ralph von Koenigswald (1902-1982), one of the leading figures of the 20th Century paleo-anthropology. Born in Berlin, von Koenigswald joined the Dutch Geological Survey of Java as paleontologist in late 1930 and went on to undertake a systematic survey of the country, making numerous discoveries of great importance to the understanding of human evolution. He became a Dutch citizen in 1937 and after the war filled a chair in Palaeontology created for him at Utrecht University, a position he held for twenty years. After his retirement he directed the paleontological research centre in Frankfurt until his death in 1982.
