Cf. Fagg, W. et al., "Yoruba Sculpture of West Africa", New York, 1982, p.169, pl.58, where the author illustrates a similar group believed to be an altar hanging for Eshu or Shango. The group includes three figures like the present lot although the author states that it would once have included four figures as Eshu shrine sculptures always comprise paired male and female figures.
