A CARVED WOODEN RELIEF DEPICTING SAINT BARTHOLOMEW, PRESUMABLY MIDDLE RHINE REGION, CIRCA 1470/1480

Wood relief, older polychromy, probably Middle Rhine, c. 1470/1480
Minor wear. Two small, thinner parts to the sides of the book have been backed and possibly partially replaced. 102 x 36 x 3 cm.

A carved wooden relief depicting Saint Bartholomew, presumably Middle Rhine Region, circa 1470/1480. The reverse flattened, with older and partially reworked polychromy. A silhouetted relief displaying an astounding sculptural quality despite its relatively shallow depth. The depiction shows the Saint holding a book and his attribute, the knife, in his hands and has been designed for a frontal viewpoint. The relief presumably originates from Rauenthal Church in Rheingau.
