A 15TH CENTURY HIGH-RELIEF WOOD FIGURE OF THE VIRGIN WITH CHILD, PRESUMABLY CENTRAL RHENISH

Wood, probably Central Rhine-Region, second half 15th Century
Minor wear, the top of the Virgin's foot lost. Height 103 cm.

A 15th century high-relief wood figure of the Virgin with Child. The reverse flattened and hollowed out, remains of an older polychromy. The standing figure of the Virgin with the crescent moon at her feet is designed for a frontal viewpoint slightly beneath the level of the statue. The Virgin stands in contrapposto with the left leg slightly forwards and the torso tipped back, and holds the infant Christ above her hip. The Child is depicted nude and holding a globe in his hand. The figure is characterised by the broad faces and the depiction of the Virgin's garment, which is draped around her body in a fine interplay of curved hems, bunched and straight folds.

Provenance
