A SOUTH GERMAN WALNUT FIGURE OF THE VIRGIN FROM A CRUCIFIXION GROUP, CIRCA 1480/1490

Wood, polychromy, South German, c. 1480/1490 (Lemp. Auct. 573, lot 2036)
Losses to the polychromy and wear to the plinth. Height 123 cm.

A South German walnut figure of the Virgin from a Crucifixion group, circa 1480/1490. Carved in the round, the older polychromy partially reworked around the face. A full-figure depiction of the Virgin standing in soft contrapposto with hands folded, her head lowered in sorrow and turned slightly to the side. Whist Her undergarment falls in gentle pleats down to the base of the sculpture, the composition is enlivened by the voluminous folds of the cloak lain around the Virgin's head and shoulders, which is bunched together in deep gathers and strongly curving seams around the front of Her body.
