AN ALLGÄU WOODEN VIRGIN WITH CHILD FROM AN ADORATION SCENE, CIRCA 1500

Wood, polychrome, the addition to the reverse prob. 19th C. Allgäu c. 1500 (GR 2.159)
With wear and minor losses to the child's fingers and the hair of the Virgin. 51 x 35 x 19 cm.

An Allgäu wooden Virgin with Child from an adoration scene, circa 1500. The Virgin is depicted enthroned and turned to the right in profile and holding the Child seated on her knees, his hand raised in a blessing gesture. The figure was presumably originally accompanied by a separate group of the adoring Magi as part of a shrine.
The front corners of the plinth are a later addition. The previously hollowed out reverse of the sculpture has been closed by two wooden panels (5-6 cm thick), presumably in the 19th century, whereby the alteration of the hair and robe of the Virgin and the throne to allow the sculpture to be viewed in the round has been carried out very well.
