A MECHELEN OAK FIGURE OF SAINT BARBARA, CIRCA 1510

Oak, Mechelen, c. 1500 (GR 2.143)
One finger of the right hand lost, the hem of the mantle beneath the right hand is an addition. Height 37.5 cm.

A Mechelen oak figure of Saint Barbara, circa 1510. Carved three quarters in the round, the reverse flattened, with minimal remains of a former polychromy. A standing full-figure depiction of the Saint holding her attributes, the tower and book; her crown is now lost. A broken wooden dowel in the base of the statue leads us to believe that it was originally pinned to a shrine. The reverse of the figure bears the parallel lines mark of the town of Mechelen.

Provenance

Purchased from Pourtales, 1971.
