Portrait of Three Children

Oil on canvas (relined). 69 x 52.5 cm.

Judging by the style of the clothing the painting is most likely made in the Northern part of the Netherlands, and should be dated to the first half of the seventeenth century, between 1625 and 1650. An indication of the wealth of the commissioners of the painting is to be found in the rattle and whistle, the 'rinkelbel'. These were presented as a gift to a newborn child and were very costly. Quite a few of these are still around and are valuable collectors items.
