A South Indian "Makara" emerald bangle.

The filled terminals formed as heads of the mythical Makara sea creature, holding a sphere with a screw clasp in their open mouths. Set with 34 foiled Columbian emeralds; the central stone antique-cut, the rest cabochon cut (4 x ca. 5.5 x 5 mm, 1 x diameter ca. 3.5 mm, 28 x diameter ca. 3 mm). Weight 114.1 g.
Tamil Nadu, 19th /20th C.

These valuable bracelets with symbolic Hindu decor were worn by the Rajas and princes of southern India. Similar examples can be found in the Victoria & Albert-Museum in London (inv. no. 03291(IS).
