A terracotta figure of a Sicilian fisher.

Signed indistinctly to the reverse. The knife and bread restored. H 17.6 cm.
Palermo, mid 19th C.

José Vilchez was born in Malaga and became court sculptor in 1840 and head of the sculpture class at the academy in Cádiz two years later. This model of a fisher was probably made after he moved to Rome.
