Anthonie Palamedesz

Two Interior Scenes with Soldiers and Figures

Oil on panel. Each 33.5 x 39 cm.
Both paintings signed lower left: APalamedesz (ligatured).

The present works are typical of the Amsterdam genre painter Anthonie Palamedesz, who was taught by Michiel van Miereveld, Dirck Hals and even Frans Hals himself. His motifs are taken from contemporary life in Amsterdam. Whilst his elder brother Palamedes Palamedesz specialised in battle scenes, Anthonie was more concerned with the lives of the soldiers who fought in these battles, often depicting them in scenes of conversations by the fireside such as the present work or after their return to their families.
The works are presented in corresponding frames and are in good overall condition.
