Flemish 18th century

An 18th century Flemish carved wooden figure of Saint Ursula (?).

Carved in the round, with older polychromy. A standing full-figure depiction of a crowned saint wearing a long gown and an ermine-lined cape and holding a book. The figure is traditionally thought to be Saint Ursula and may originally have held a martyr's palm in the right hand. The arrow held in her left hand has broken and only survives as a short stump.
Minor wear, the brass crown is an addition. Height 87 cm (without crown).

Provenance

Private collection, West Germany.
