Italian School early 17th century

Still Life with Poultry, Vegetables, Fruit and a Tortoise

Oil on canvas. 100 x 74 cm.

This magnificent still life is the product of a skilled, hitherto unidentified still life painter most likely active in Italy at the beginning of the XVII century.
The composition is still somehow archaic: The objects, beautifully painted in their detail, are listed in the space in a paratactic scheme and the painter unifies the space through the rendering of the light effects rather than the use of perspective. The painter probably knew Roman still lifes painted around 1600, as this piece shows some affinities to the work of Francesco Zucchi, Giovan Battista Crescenzi and even of the so called “Master of Hartford”.
