Barthélemy Prieur, attributed to

A bronze figure of Cupid as an archer attributed to Barthélemy Prieur.

Cast in the round, chased and with old patina.. The youthful figure of Cupid is shown running forwards and turning at the waist to shoot an arrow. This motif allowed the artist to achieve the contemporary ideal of a sculpture entirely in the round. The invention of this figure is usually attributed to the Parisian court sculptor Barthélemy Prieur, and the best comparison piece of the exact same dimensions is found in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich (inv. no. 62/26). The present work can be dated to around 1590.
In perfect condition except that the bow and arrows are lost. Loosely pegged onto a modern spherical stand. Height 11 cm (without peg).

Provenance

Private ownership, North Germany. - The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
