The enamel on copper portrait miniature depicting Emperor Joseph II and his second wife Maria Josepha of Bavaria. In a capsule frame set with rose-cut diamonds. The reverse engraved with description in English and a collection no. With a hinged stand. 2.7 x 2 cm. Frame: 6 x 4.1 cm. Total weight 43.2 g.
Probably ca. 1765, the frame 1st half 19th C.

Archduke Joseph II of Austria was crowned King of the holy Roman empire in Frankfurt am Main in 1764, and followed his father as Emperor the following year. This fine portrait probably shows the young imperial couple on occasion of their engagement in 1765. The empress died of pox just two years later.
