An Italian carved fruitwood neoclassical centrepiece

Formed as an acanthus clasped urn flanked by two griffons. Minor losses due to insect damage. H 48, W 26 cm.
Possibly Milan, 1st quarter 19th C.

This decorative piece is inspired by the carvings of Aubert-Henri-Joseph Parent and based on a motif from Giocondo Albertolli's "Alcune decorazioni di nobili sale ed altri ornamenti", published in Milan in 1787. The design of two facing griffons could also be used as a motif for furniture and stucco compositions.
