The central crowned shield with the monogram "EB" supported by two female figures above two putti as allegories of sapientia and fortitudo. The reverse with a shallow carving of a vase amid neoclassical tendrils. Three chips to the flowerheads, one toe lacking. H 43.5, W 17.5 cm.
After 1853.

Eugénie de Montijo (1826 - 1920) became empress of France through her love marriage to Napoleon III on 23rd February 1853, which was considered morganatic. Eugénie was never popular with the French people, but she did exert considerable influence on contemporary tastes, especially in fashion.
