Portrait of a Gentleman in Armour and a Lace Collar

Oil on canvas (relined). 74 x 60 cm (oval).

With remains of an older, typewritten label to the back of the stretcher, reading: „Philip de Champ[aigne] / French, 1602-167[4] / Portrait o[f] Marshal Tur[enne] / Head and shoulders to the front, […]y blond hair, moustache / and goatee, wide lace collar, and bearing armor; complementary / background. / Canvas. Oval. Height, 29 inches; width, 23½ inches. / (Winthorp) / […] C. Winthorp, Boston, Mass.“, and additionally hand-written: „Portrait of Marshal Turenne“.
The traditional identification of the sitter as Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, vicomte de Turenne (1611-1675), is not entirely convincing.
