Limoges 1st half 13th century

A Limoges enamel candlestick, first half 13th century

Cast and engraved copper with remains of enamel and gilding. On a triangular base with foliate decor supported by three curving feet. The round, slender shaft with geometric engravings and a central, rounded nodus with stylised tendril decor supporting a funnel-shaped drip pan. The shaft appears to have once been gilt, and the foliate decor was picked out in coloured enamel.
The feet soldered, wear. Height 21.5 cm.

Formerly Bergisches Museum Schloss Burg an der Wupper, inv. no. K/Ku 63.66 (purchased 1963, sold before 1984). - Cologne art dealership. - Private collection, North Germany since 1984.
