A. Coquilhat

Portrait of Princess Alexandra Amalie of Bavaria (?)

Oil on canvas. 93.5 x 76 cm.
Signed lower left: A. Coquilhat f.

According to tradition, this work depicts the Bavarian Princess Alexandra Amalie (1826-1875), and this assumption is supported by comparison with the portrait of the princess by Joseph Karl Stieler which hangs in the so-called "gallery of beauties" at Nymphenburg Palace. Alexandra Amalie was the youngest daughter of the Bavarian King Ludwig I and his wife Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. She herself remained unmarried and was active as an author and translator, among other pursuits.
