A large silver-mounted historicist "griffin's claw" buffalo horn chalice. Unmarked, probably German, late 19th C.

A drinking vessel formed from a buffalo horn with silver mountings in the Gothic taste. The front of the horn resting on two towers carried on the backs of elephants, the back supported by a lobed base. H 44; L 54 cm; weight 2,190 g.

The present work is a replica of a 15th century silver-mounted drinking horn from Lüneburg cathedral treasury which is missing since 1945.
