With further sketches in pencil, the inscription "4 men" and various names to the reverse. Gouache, silver and gold-bronze paint over pencil on machine-made laid paper. 34.9 x 25.6 cm. Monogrammed in Cyrillic "NG" lower left, inscribed "N. Gontscharowa" in ink lower right. - The edges yellowed, minor tears and creases, remains of adhesive and gum arabic, pin holes. With surface wear and numerous studio traces.

This work is probably a design made for the first performance of "The Golden Cockrel" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at the Opéra Paris on 21st May 1914. The performance was a grand success, not least due to Natalia Goncharova's spectacular set designs and fantastic costumes.
