Interior gilt. Concealing three compartments for cigarettes, matches, and striking surface. The push-button set with a sapphire cabochon, the lid with applied gold "MM" monograms in Latin and Cyrillic script. German imperial stamp for fineness 800, company signature "A. Spiess". 1.2 x 11 x 5.6 cm. Weight 145.9 g.
Germany, ca. 1900.

The German-Russian monogram is presumably that of Princess Maria Maximilanovna von Leuchtenberg (St. Petersburg 1841 - 1914), daughter of Maximilian de Beauharnais, 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg and his wife Grand Duchess Maria Nikolajevna Romanova. The princess married Grand Duke Michael von Baden in 1863.
