Paul I (St. Petersburg 1754 - ibid. 1801) was the only son of Grand Prince Peter Feodorovitch Romanov III and his wife Catherine. He was Duke of Holstein-Gottorf from 1762 - 1773 and became Tsar in 1796 following the death of his mother, the unpopular Catherine the Great.
