An Italian bronze pax with a Pietà

Remains of gilding. Designed as an arch-shaped panel with a Mannerist pieta scene. The relief slightly worn from use in some places, the terminal of the lower handle lacking, older repair to the surmount. H 19.6 cm.
16th / 17th C.

The depiction is based on Michelangelo Buonarotti's famous Pietà for Vittoria Colonna, which is dated 1538 - 44 and today housed in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.
