A Polish kontusz sash

Woven silk and gold threads, lined with silk. Restored over older damage. L 345, W 30.5 cm.
17th / 18th C.

The kontusz was a type of garment which originated in Turkey but became fashionable among Polish aristocrats wishing to distance themselves from western fashions during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was often tied at the waist by an artfully folded sash, often with a plain side for weekdays and a colourful Sunday side.
