An important Limoges enamel pax with the adoration of the Magi

Coloured enamel painting on a slightly convex copper plaque. Transluscent enamel over silver foil (so-called "paillons"), gilt highlights. Cast and chased silver alloy bezel set with coloured gemstones and a pearl. A curved panel depicting the Magi in the stable, housed in a silver tabernacle frame bearing a roundel containing a further plaque with three stylised lilies before a white ground to the tympanum. The surfaces of the dark red parts corroded, a loss to the enamel in the upper left. An old lead restoration to the upper left and the upper centre of the edge. Four stones in the upper arch lost. Cracks and wear to the enamel. H of frame 20.5 cm.
1st third 16th C., tentatively attributed to Nardon or Jean I Pénicaud.

Nardon and Jean I Pénicaud are the founders of a legendary family of enamel painters from Limoges. They specialised in a new technique of enamel painting which allowed for the creation of large images, in the manner of panel painting. Nardon was more indebted to the Gothic tradition than his younger brother Jean, and his small cabinet-pieces are orientated on manuscript painting. Tightly packed figural groups, starry night skies, and Gothic drapery characterise his designs.
