Giacomo del Pò

Christ and the Adulteress

Oil on canvas (relined). 94.5 x 78 cm.

Giacomo del Pó studied under his father and with Nicolas Poussin, later becoming a member of the Accademia di San Luca. Although also active in Rome, he spent most of his career in Naples, where he received important commissions for religious and secular works. He also participated in the decoration of the Belvedere in Vienna. Bernardo De Dominici has called this painter's style as “pittoresca e bizzarra”, and his fanciful brushwork represents a unique contribution to the Neapolitan Baroque. The theatrical gestures and rhythmic placement of his figures can be described as “Neo-Mannerist”, whereas his draperies are clearly Rococo in style. With wispy brushstrokes, the artist creates vivid fields of colour that appear lit from within, without ever eschewing naturalism entirely.
Nicola Spinosa has confirmed the attribution to Giacomo del Pó in email correspondence with the present owner.
