Tilman Riemenschneider, studio of

A carved limewood figure of the Virgin and Child from the workshop of Tilman Riemenschneider

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Possibly with minimal remains of former polychromy to the hair. The Virgin is depicted standing in contrapposto holding the Christ Child over Her hips with both hands, resting Her extended left foot on the crescent moon. In his expertise, Zoege von Manteuffel compares the style, drapery, facial features, and especially the hands of the Virgin with numerous works produced by Tilman Riemenschneider and his studio, but he dates the present work to around 1515.
Round, hairline cracks to the base. Wear with losses to the drapery of the lower right. Height 59 cm.

Certificate

Prof. Dr. Claus Zoege von Manteuffel, Stuttgart 7.9.1994.

Provenance

Purchased in Würzburg around 1900, henceforth in German family ownership.
