Suzanne Valadon

Blumenstrauss in spanischem Krug
1928

Oil on canvas 55 x 46 cm Framed. Signed and dated 'Suzanne Valadon 1928' in black lower right. - The upper right corner and the lower left corner each with small, older nail hole. In fine condition.

Still lifes play an important role in Suzanne Valadon's work between 1925 and 1933. Beginning in 1927 she repeatedly depicted simple Spanish clay pots, as in the present painting. These are combined in diverse variations with colourfully arranged bouquets of flowers.
In 1928 Valadon could look back on an eventful life. Berthe Weill devoted a solo exhibition to her work that year in Paris, while she would achieve her international breakthrough with a group exhibition in New York. Her son Maurice Utrillo, who had already become a celebrated painter long before that time, reportedly suggested that everyone should kneel down before her. Paul Pétridès is full of esteem in summing up her work: “She did not separate her art from her life, and she infused her painting with lucid truth and intense life - in an oeuvre equal to the greatest.” (Paul Pétridès, Suzanne Valadon: 1865 - 1938, in: exhib. cat., Maurice Utrillo V. Suzanne Valadon, Haus der Kunst, Munich 1960, p. XXIV).
