A Sinotibetan gilt bronze figure of arhat Rahula. 18th century

The arhat seated on two textile draped meditation cushions, dressed in a voluminous layered monastic robe, holding a jewelled foliate crown in his hands. Base open.
Height 12 cm

Rahula was the son of Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha Shakyamuni) and his wife Yasodhara, and became one of his sixteen arhats. He is most commonly depicted in Tibetan art holding up a jewelled crown which refers to his father´s and his own royal lineage and also to his renouncement of this worldly priviledge.
