A silver gilt communion jug from St. Catherine's Church in Magdeburg

Interior gilt. Pear-shaped vessel upon a gadrooned base, with pointed spout and curved handle with beaded decor. The domed hinged lid with conforming decor and a small spherical finial, the thumb piece formed as the head of a cherub. Chased Régence decor to the body and to the neck a round engraved reserve enclosing a depiction of St. Catherine. Engraved to the underside "ANNO 1716". H 27 cm, weight 1,242 g.

The Katharinenkirche on Breiter Weg in Magdeburg was damaged slightly by aircraft bombs during WWII but later demolished completely by the communist regime of the GDR.

Provenance

Purchased from the church with some war damage ca. 1955 by Eberhard Giese. Extensive repairs carried out by the Berlin goldsmith Jens Schleede ca. 1965.
