A rare pair of rock crystal potpourri vases in the manner of Pierre Gouthière

Opulent ormolu-mounted vases on tiered square plinths of bronze and quartz, the Neoclassical gilt bronze mountings surrounding the solid quartz bodies with ram's heads and pieced rims, the solid quartz covers with large finials formed as a bunch of grapes. Minor wear to the gilding. H ca. 42 cm.
Late 18th C.

This type of covered vase, rendered in stone or imitation stone, mounted with ram's head handles, its finial formed as a pinecone or bunch of grapes, with a fries or acanthus ornament bordering its lower section, and resting on a square plinth remained popular from the era of Louis XVI to the late 19th century. The form was produced both in Paris and in Birmingham by Matthew Boulton, among others. The bronze mountings are based on engravings published in Paris in 1772 after vases designed for the French court by Pierre Gouthière.
