A dark blue satin embroidered Manchu man's formal court robe (chaofu) buttoned at the side, the upper part embroidered with multicoloured silk threads and couched gold-wrapped paper threads with four large dragon roundels amidst small clouds, cranes and emblems, the lower plaited skirt with eight dragon medallions to the front and back and running dragons above lishui, the same design to the sleeves. Lining of blue silk. Traces of use and small mendings at the sleeves. Late 19th century.
Length 112 cm

In view of the length of this robe it may have been the garment of a young boy.
