An ivory netsuke of a Portuguese man. Late 19th century

An ivory netsuke of a Portuguese man, commonly identified as Fernandes Mendez Pinto, holding a monkey by the leash and warding off the monkey pulling his beard. At the back inscription reading Bunka gannen (1804) ichigatsu Nagasaki komojin motte kuru. Signed Shunsai in a cartouche reserved from the monkey's fur. Late 19th century.
