A Nuremberg silver gilt goblet and cover

Round waisted foot supporting a shaft with vase-form node and three scrolls. The slender cuppa decorated with finely embossed and chased scrolls and elongated gadrooning. The corresponding slip lid crowned by a model of a fish. A small loss to the edge of the lid. H 37 cm, weight 456 g.
Marks of Hans I Clauß, 1630 - 36.

Goblets by the goldsmith Hans Clauß all display an extraordinary quality of craftsmanship. Many of his works, which include nautilus goblets and novelty drinking vessels, are now housed in public collections such as the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Kassel and the armoury of the Kremlin in Moscow.
