A 14th century West German processional cross

Brass cross with engraved and enamelled decor. Cast bronze figures with chased details. Remains of gilding. The beams of the cross with foliate terminals and decorated with stylised engraved tendrils to the avers, except in the areas surrounding the mourning Virgin and Saint John. The reverse engraved with depictions of Christ Enthroned, the four symbols of the Evangelists, and tendrils on embossed ground.
Drilled holes to the cross, the figures loosely attached. Four enamel plaques and two figures lost. Wear and dents with minor losses. 73 x 51 cm.
