Mechelen early 16th century

An early 16th century Mechelen carved wood figure of the blessing Christ Child

Carved in the round. The presumably original older polychromy with some minor retouchings. A figure of the Christ Child standing nude holding a globe in His left hand and with His right hand extended to bless the observer, at whom He gazes benevolently. The facial features, hair, and proportions of this finely carved example exhibit the typical characteristics of the Mechelen school and He is stamped with the mark of this city on the sole of the left foot.
In good condition, the right forearm with hand extended in blessing reattached or possibly replaced. Höhe 35 cm.

Provenance

Italian private collection.
