A Tibetan gilt bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni/Vajrasana. 17th century
Seated on a double-lotus throne, his hands in bhumisparsa- and dhyana-mudra and wearing monastic robes. The vajra in front of him alludes to the Tibetan name of Bodhgaya, Dordschedan, vajra seat, where Shakyamuni is reported to have defeated the negative forces represented by Mara and made the bhumisparsa-mudra. In respect of the vajra, the figure can also be called Buddha Vajrasana. The face with applied cold gold and polychrome pigments, the hair painted blue. Base sealed and incised with a double-vajra.
