Two Canton fans. 19th century

a) Both sides of the asymetrical silk mounted paper embroidered with a pair of pheasants and other birds underneath bamboo and on the other side with birds by a rose bush, the plain sticks of ivory, the guards carved with flower sprays and figures in a garden landscape. b) Both sides of the paper painted in gouache with courtly figures in a palace setting, the faces of bone, the garments of fabric, the sticks of ivory carved with figures in a garden landscape on a striped ground in openwork, the guards carved as those above. Both fans a bit damaged, and both in a black lacquer box painted in shades of gold and lined with silk, the one of fan b) with a glazed inner cover. (2)
