Tanuki. Ivory. Around 1800

Standing upright with a large lotus leaf worn as a hat held in place by the upraised, bushy tail. A gourd bottle hangs from its left foreleg. The ball-shaped scrotum visible between its legs. Ivory, finely carved, engraved and coloured dark in places, with a fine, glassy, golden-yellow patina, the eyes inlaid in black horn.
