A dated Hachmann mortar

Cast bronze with slightly mottled golden brown natural patina. Decorated with a heraldic shield bearing the house mark supported by two winged half-figures. To the reverse a medallion with the Veil of Veronica flanked by two putti. The broad rim inscribed in Gothic minuscule "jacob die greif cily syn huisfrouw" with a dog, a rabbit, and a winged caryatid. The base inscribed "int jaer ons heren mvclxxvi". H 17.1, D 17.4 cm. Weight 6.8 kg. Including a later iron pestle.
