A pair of South Indian Thandatti earrings

Sheet bronze with gold plating and fillings. Comprised of hinged geometric figures. Formerly screw fittings, recently converted to studs. With age related wear and dents. Ca. 4.7 x 3 cm. Total weight 44.44 g.
Tamil Nadu, 19th / 20th C.

These three-dimensional earrings are based on mandala motifs, which in Hindu belief symbolise the harmonious interplay of the three worlds: Earth, the heavens, and the godly universe.
