An enamelled snuff box with battle scenes

Gilt copper mounted rectangular enamelled box with a slightly domed hinged lid. The six outer faces and the lid finely painted with scenes from the Ottoman wars. The corners with minor restorations, hairline cracks. H 3.5, W 7.6, D 6 cm.
Berlin, the decor attributed to Daniel Chodowiecki, mid-18th C., after Georg Philipp Rugendas the Elder.

Due to his talent in drawing and design, the young Daniel Chodowiecki (1726 - 43) was sent to learn under the Augsburg based enamel painter Johann Jacob Haid following his apprenticeship as a merchant. Haid in turn had been taught under the Augsburg battle painter and engraver Georg Philipp Rugendas the Elder (1666 - 1742), and the scenes on this snuff box are based upon his works.
