A Potsdam softwood armchair

Carved softwood painted in silver and gold, replaced silk upholstery. With curved legs and pierced apron. The oval back with a moulded, slightly concave frame surmounted by a carved cartouche. Zoomorph arm rests terminating in scrolls. Overpainted polychromy with localised wear. H 110, W 76, seat depth 48 cm.
In the manner of Johann Michael Hoppenhaupt, third quarter 18th C.

Similar chairs can be found in Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin and the Neue Palais in Potsdam. The ebenist Hoppenhaupt began his career in Berlin working alongside August Nahl, by whom his style was strongly influenced. When Nahl left Potsdam, Hoppenhaupt was left in charge of the interior design of the Neue Palais and was highly influential for its final design.
